Eco Architecture Wairarapa

Carterton House

The Typology and Environmental Context

Situated in Carterton with expansive views over the Tararua Ranges, this project is a disciplined exploration of sustainable residential architecture. The home was designed as a calm, serene sanctuary that balances exceptional energy performance with a lifestyle centered around wellbeing and self-sufficiency. The layout integrates the primary residence with a creative studio and established productive gardens, embedding the architecture deeply within its Wairarapa landscape.

Building Performance and Materiality

True sustainable architecture requires a rigorous focus on internal comfort and building science. The home serves as an absolute model for passive design, optimizing solar orientation to manage natural heating and cooling cycles. The design incorporates a highly insulated building envelope, advanced thermal mass management, and a disciplined selection of low-impact, non-toxic materials. These elements work in tandem to achieve exceptional thermal performance and indoor air quality, ensuring the internal spaces remain at a stable, comfortable temperature year-round without relying on heavy mechanical energy use.

The elevatoins were inspired by traditional forms with clean detailing. The gabled bedroom and living wings create an L shape on the site, separated by a lower entry hallway and verandah. These forms serve to create shelter and also maximize the views towards the mountains and landscape from the two wings. Attention was paid to the solar gain and passive cooling through the house to enable it to respond well to its particular climate

The home’s success as a benchmark for high-performance design led to its extensive feature in the publication Eco Home by Melinda Williams. Highlighted as a case study in how to successfully balance design, energy efficiency, and personal wellbeing.
