The Heritage Fabric and Collaborative Vision

Magpie Cottage involved the upgrade and expansion of a 1920s character dwelling. The project was developed in partnership with the clients, focusing on preserving the original integrity and scale of the building while introducing modern spatial efficiencies and customized interior elements.

Handcrafted Intervention and Detail

Rather than applying standard renovation methods, the design response relies on custom detailing that respects the cottage's era. Structural interventions were weighed against the existing building fabric. It used a palette of natural materials, hand applied plaster and bespoke timber joinery that integrates with the original 1920s craftsmanship. This material approach ensures the new insertions function for contemporary living while remaining rooted in the home's historic narrative.

Spatial Realignment and Longevity

The internal layout was reconfigured to improve natural light and the home's daily operational flow. By updating the thermal performance, structural integrity, and spatial connections of the cottage, the project delivers a functional modern home without losing the character that defines it. The finished dwelling stands as a result of close client-architect collaboration, showing how character homes can be upgraded for long-term endurance.
