Coromandel Holiday home
Located a short distance from the beach at Matarangi, this project involved a sensitive extension to an existing Sea Ranch-style holiday home. The primary objective was to introduce additional, flexible living space for an expanding family, allowing multiple generations to stay together comfortably. The design needed to honor the relaxed, unpretentious vernacular of the classic Coromandel bach while elevating its functional capacity and connection to the coastal environment.
Our design extends the original footprint by adding a highly versatile multi-purpose wing. This new pavilion functions as an adaptable secondary living space, media room, or Golf cart storage depending on the family's needs. The extension mirrors the simple geometries and vertical timber cladding of the Sea Ranch aesthetic, ensuring the new built form integrates seamlessly with the existing structure rather than competing with it.
The link between the old and new structures creates a sheltered outdoor transition zone, providing a wind-protected alternative to the exposed seaward aspect of the site. Large slider doors open up to invite the coastal elements inside, keeping the focus entirely on the proximity to the wide sandy beach. The completed extension demonstrates how traditional New Zealand holiday architecture can be thoughtfully scaled to handle modern family life without losing its essential sense of place.
