Sustainable Residential & Studio Design — Eco-Subdivision Study

The Brief and Subdivision Constraints

This project, though currently unbuilt, was developed for a site within a dedicated eco-subdivision with environmental covenants. The design regulations mandated minimal fossil fuel reliance, stringent material sustainability metrics, and low embodied energy. The brief required a comprehensive, completely off-grid home comprising a primary residence, a detached garage, and a specialized working studio for a production potter.

Technical Engineering and Kiln Integration

The primary technical challenge centered on integrating a high-heat, high-energy potter's kiln into an entirely self-sufficient, off-grid infrastructure. The home was engineered to collect all its own water and generate its own power supply.

To achieve this the buildings were designed to high-performance passive standards. We utilized advanced dynamic thermal modeling to analyze solar gains, internal heat loads, and insulation performance. This modeling allowed us to precisely calculate the sizing requirements for the Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) air exchange unit, ensuring optimal indoor air quality and temperature stability.

Passive Solar Architecture

The orientation and massing of the buildings were rigorously adjusted based on the thermal data. We engineered deep roof overhangs tailored to the site’s precise solar paths, optimizing winter solar heat gain while completely shading the interiors during peak summer months to eliminate the need for mechanical cooling, and allowing the lower winter sun to warm the building naturally in the cooler seasons. The resulting concept serves as a clear blueprint for how specialized, high-energy creative and beautiful spaces can be successfully integrated into ultra-low-energy, self-sustaining residential architecture.
