Work in Progress
Situated on the coastline of Langs Beach, this project is a modern interpretation of the classic New Zealand bach, elevated to a luxury standard. The client required a highly tactile, contemporary home that capitalizes on expansive ocean views while remaining fundamentally functional. Key utilitarian requirements included dedicated, integrated storage for a boat and tractor—essential components for coastal Northland living.
Coastal design requires a careful balance between exposure and protection. To address the prevailing sea winds, the architectural form creates a sheltered central courtyard. This layout provides a highly private, wind-protected outdoor living zone behind the main pavilion, while the seaward aspect features a generous front deck overlooking the ocean. This dual-courtyard strategy allows the inhabitants to adjust their living environment depending on the weather conditions.
The design language is rooted in New Zealand modernism, focusing on raw, honest materials that weather beautifully in a marine environment. Simple, confident geometries are paired with deeply textured surfaces to create a building that feels integrated into the Langs Beach landscape. Currently transitioning from a concept render into the construction phase, this home demonstrates how luxury holiday living can be both refined and resilient.
